Start with the 2-Week Basic Board & Train or Basic Obedience private lessons. Both build a reliable foundation of sit, down, place, heel and come.

I want off-leash control in publicParks, stores, outdoor spaces

The 2-Week Advanced Board & Train is our most popular program. Your dog responds to commands around distractions without a leash, plus you get free lifetime tune-ups.

Aggressive, reactive or anxiousToward people or other dogs, or fear-based

Book the $30 evaluation first so a trainer can meet your dog. Lunging, barking and growling with no bite usually fits the 2-week program. A dog that has bitten, or has severe anxiety or fear, usually needs the 3-week. Leash reactivity is very fixable with the 8-week lessons. Both board and train options include 4 weekly follow-up lessons.

Basic Marker Mastery is built for exactly this: a slip lead, a clicker and a long line, with everything driven by marking and rewarding. It covers come, sit, place and leash work. All of our puppy programs are e-collar free too.

Dog Training Cost FAQ

Questions about price?

Straight answers about what training costs in Charleston and southern West Virginia, including tax and fees.

Still deciding?

The first phone call is always free. You'll talk to someone who actually trains dogs, and if we're not the right fit, we'll say so.

(304) 244-2468
How much does dog training cost in Charleston, WV?

Our programs range from a $30 evaluation to $5,400 for the 4-Week Elite Board & Train. Private lessons run $315 to $1,400, and board and train runs $1,400 to $5,400. Every price is published on this page, so you never have to call for pricing. Two things are added at checkout: 7% West Virginia sales tax on all training, and a 3% fee on card payments.

Why is there sales tax on dog training in West Virginia?

West Virginia taxes professional services, and dog training is one of them, so we're required to collect 7% state sales tax on every program. It applies whether you pay by card, cash, check or Zelle. For example, a 2-Week Advanced Board & Train at $2,800 carries $196 in sales tax, plus 3% if you pay by card. Call (304) 244-2468 and we'll write out an exact quote with any discounts applied.

Can I make payments instead of paying all at once?

Yes. Affirm is available on any program. It runs a soft credit check that won't affect your score, and 0% APR plans are usually available. Affirm pays us up front, you pay Affirm over time, and you skip the 3% card fee.

For board and train, a $500 non-refundable deposit locks your dates, and the balance is invoiced before training starts. We also take cash and check (made out to Wild to Wonderful Dog Training). Lessons are paid in full before the first appointment.

Do you offer military, first responder or multi-dog discounts?

Yes. Households that are past or present military, EMT, firefighter, first responder or law enforcement get 10% off. There's also a 10% discount when you sign up more than one dog. Behavior Modification programs qualify for the military and veteran discount only, not the multi-dog discount. Mention it when you call and we'll build it into your quote.

What's the difference between the 1, 2 and 4-week board and train programs?

1-Week Off Leash ($1,400): come, sit and place off leash around the home, plus household manners. Best for a basically decent dog that needs the edges cleaned up.

2-Week Basic ($2,000): adds leash work, on-leash control in high distraction, off-leash in low distraction, and public outings.

2-Week Advanced ($2,800): full off-leash reliability in high distraction, adding down and heel, with free refreshers for life. Our most popular program.

4-Week Elite ($5,400): everything in Advanced plus send-away to place, sit in motion, push-ups, distance down, a command you choose, 12+ public outings and a video call at the halfway mark. Compare them side by side.

How much does aggressive dog training cost?

The 2-Week Behavior Modification Board & Train is $3,500, for dogs whose aggression, reactivity or anxiety has stayed at lunging, barking and growling with no bite. The 3-Week Severe program is $5,000, for dogs that have bitten or have severe anxiety or fear. Both include four weekly follow-up lessons. For leash reactivity, the 8-Week Behavior Modification Lessons are $1,200.

An evaluation comes first, your dog must be muzzle trained before arrival (we give you a free muzzle conditioning course), and we don't promise a cure. We teach your dog to handle their emotions and give you tools that work.

How soon can my dog start?

Lessons usually start quickly. Board and train dates fill up, since a good trainer only takes one or two dogs at a time, and the usual wait is about 8 weeks. A $500 non-refundable deposit holds your spot.

Need to start sooner? Ask about ExpeditePro™: an added $100 for one-week programs or $200 for two-week programs moves you up the list and puts your dog with our head trainer.

How young can my puppy start?

Puppy Consultations ($100) and Puppy Lessons ($315) start at 8 weeks. The 2-Week Puppy Board & Train ($1,600) is ideally for puppies 10 to 12 weeks old, and we can't take puppies older than 16 weeks for it. Adult obedience and any e-collar program start at 20 weeks. Missed the puppy board and train window? We'll start you in lessons and pick up the adult program at 20 weeks.

Can you prepare my dog for therapy dog certification?

Yes. Therapy Dog Preparation is a 10-week, one-on-one course for $1,400 that prepares your dog for the Public Access Test, which is scheduled after the ten lessons. Your dog can't have behavioral issues to enter. If you've already completed a 2-Week Advanced Board & Train, you can take the test separately for $150.

Where do you train? Do you come to my home?

We train at dog-friendly public locations around the Kanawha Valley rather than out of one building. Your trainer picks the spot based on what your dog needs, starting somewhere quiet and moving to busier places as your dog sharpens up. We don't offer in-home lessons. We cover Charleston and much of southern West Virginia. See the areas we serve.

Is professional training worth the money?

Videos can't watch your dog and tell you your timing is half a second late, or that what looks like stubbornness is actually fear. A dog that bolts, bites or destroys the house costs far more than a training bill. Spread over the years you'll have your dog, training usually comes to well under a dollar a day. Try the calculator.

Aggression

When a dog threatens harm to a person or another dog through snarling, growling, snapping, biting, barking or lunging. Causes include guarding territory or family, resource guarding, fear, frustration, prey drive or pain.
